Weak Lensing by Large Scale Structure in Open , Flat , and Closed Universes

چکیده
Weak lensing is the distortion (polarization) of images of distant objects, such as high redshift galaxies, by gravitational elds in the limit where the distortion is small. Gravitational potential uctuations due to large scale structure cause correlated distortions of the images of high redshift galaxies. These distortions are observable with current large telescopes and instrumentation. In a Friedmann-Robertson-Walker (FRW) metric I calculate the weak lensing pattern due to large scale structure for arbitrary 0 and zero cosmological constant . For a given cosmological model, speci ed by 0 and a power spectrum of density uctuations, I calculate the statistical properties of the polarization eld for an arbitrary redshift source distribution in a simple closed form. It is shown that for low redshift z of the sources, the polarization amplitude is proportional to 0, while at higher redshift the polarization measures the value of (z), where z is the characteristic source redshift. Moreover, the statistics of the polarization eld are a direct measure of the power spectrum of density uctuations.

Gravitational instabilities and faster evolving density perturbations
The evolution of inhomogeneities in a spherical collapse model is studied by expanding the Einstein equation in powers of inverse radial parameter. In the linear regime, the density contrast is obtained for flat, closed and open universes. In addition to the usual modes, an infinite number of new growing modes are contained in the solutions for pressureless open and closed universes. In the non...
متن کاملDetectability of Gravitational Lensing Effect on the Two-point Correlation Function of Hotspots in the CMB maps
We present quantitative investigations of the weak lensing effect on the two-point correlation functions of local maxima (hotspots), ξpk−pk(θ), in the cosmic microwave background (CMB) maps. The lensing effect depends on the projected mass fluctuations between today and the redshift zrec ≈ 1100. If adopting the Gaussian assumption for the primordial temperature fluctuations field, the peak stat...
متن کاملThe Topology of Weak Lensing Fields
The topology of weak lensing fields is studied using the 2-dimensional genus statistic. Simulated fields of the weak lensing convergence are used to focus on the effect of nonlinear gravitional evolution and to model the statistical errors expected in observational surveys. For large smoothing angles, the topology is in agreement with the predictions from linear theory. On smoothing angles smal...
متن کاملSimulating Weak Lensing by Large Scale Structure
We model weak gravitational lensing of light by large-scale structure using ray tracing through N-body simulations. The method is described with particular attention paid to numerical convergence. We investigate some of the key approximations in the multi-plane ray tracing algorithm. Our simulated shear and convergence maps are used to explore how well standard assumptions about weak lensing ho...
متن کاملMetric Tests for Curvature from Weak Lensing and Baryon Acoustic Oscillations
We describe a practical measurement of the curvature of the Universe which, unlike current constraints, relies purely on the properties of the Robertson-Walker metric rather than any assumed model for the dynamics and content of the Universe. The observable quantity is the cross-correlation between foreground mass and gravitational shear of background galaxies, which depends upon the angular di...
